Something I have never understood.

For well over a decade now I have been traveling somewhere for the winter/off-season to prepare for the upcoming racing season.  Some years I have been more serious that others, and over time some of my traveled to locations have become more of a second home than a training location, but no matter where I go, one thing escapes me.

I have been going certain places for many years.... to the point that the locals know me.  Now we all know I'm no great rider and it's no secret that the money I have made from riding hasn't listed me into the Forbes 100 list.  However compared the average person on a bike, I have a certain non-negligible background in cycling.  Why is it then, that when I go on a group ride, people who know me, and who know I am without an ounce of a doubt 1000 time better than them at going up a hill, still sprint past me at the bottom of hills as if they think I'm about to get dropped?
